The Permanent Way . . . . . . . . .

All track on the visible sections of the layout has code 75 nickel silver rail and, with the exception of the turnouts is SMP finescale flexi track, The turnouts are either hand built using C & L solvent weld components or from the PECO finescale range. Track and turnouts in the fiddle yards are from the standard code 100 PECO range 37 406 waits at the Up home signal

26 031 heads out of "Blair" and over the north ccrossover The trackbed was formed from 3mm thick cork sheet glued to the baseboards with impact adhesive. Trackwork and turnouts were then pinned in position and ballasted with fine granite chippings secured in the traditional way with dilute PVA adhesive. Once dry all track areas were airbrushed with varying shades of "grime". Since all services on the highland line are diesel hauled, particular attention was given to "oily patches" where locomotives stand.

In operation, we have found that finescale track does not attract an accumulation of grime and at exhibitions, an initial clean with a track rubber lasts for two to three days provided all locomotive wheels are also cleaned at the same time.

The "Track Plan" gives an overall view of the layout which measures some
32' x 16'. A enlarged and captioned plan is available to download
