In
an effort to overcome the usual problems
encountered with exhibition layouts, we
decided to supply the baseboards with
separate multicore cables from the
control panel with a multipin socket
fitted to each board. These cables are
permanently connected to the panel and
stored in the lower section during
transportation. This system has proved
invaluable when fault finding since any
broken wires etc will only cause a fault
on one board and there are no loose
jumper cables to worry about when moving
the layout. |

The
control panel for "Blair
Atholl" is constructed from 9mm
plywood, is freestanding, 6ft long and
fitted with a reverse printed perspex
track diagram. The layout is wired for
cab control by three hand held H&H
controllers and each track section is
fitted with an isolating switch and
rotary switch to select the controller.
3mm recessed LED's give indication of
controller assignment and all sections
which, on the prototype are under direct
control of Blair Atholl signal box, have
been fitted with track circuit detection
using a scheme from the Roger Amos book

Faithful
to prototype, seventeen long lever
miniature switches represent the signal
box lever frame and operate the signals
and points in the station area.
FiddleYard points are controlled via a
route selector switch, diode matrix and
very large capacity, purpose built
capacitor discharge unit operating at 36v
DC. Semaphore signals are operated with
modified 12v relays to which an extension
arm has been soldered to the moving
contacts. The relays are mounted directly
under the signals and fitted with a
return spring. The relay contacts are
connected to LED's on the panel which
indicate the position of signals. |
